Treatment of Complications Associated with Lower Fixed Retainers
Volume 50 : Number 1 : Page 54 : Jan 2016
Bonded retainers are often used to maintain orthodontic treatment results, especially for an increasing number of practitioners advocating long-term or even lifelong retention. Although fixed retainers have been described as effective, safe and predictable, and compatible with periodontal health, long-term retention is not without risks. Failures of fixed retainers, as evidenced by debonding or fatigue wire fracture, are relatively common. Long-term use of fixed retainers is associated with increased calculus and plaque accumulation, with a consequent risk of gingival recession and increased probing depths.

OVERVIEW
Bisphosphonate Therapy and Orthodontics: Implications for Postmenopausal Women
Volume 56 : Number 3 : Page 175 : Mar 2022
Older women on bisphosphonate therapy are increasingly seeking orthodontic treatment. The authors review current evidence regarding the biological characteristics of postmenopausal women and the potential effects of BPs on tooth movement. Recommendations are provided for managing such patients.

Volume 21 : Number 7 : Page 0 : Jul 1987
Since the advent of cephalometric radiography, orthodontists have focused on the lateral x-ray as their primary source of patient skeletal and dentoalveolar data. However, the frontal (PA) and basilar...

The Mushroom Bracket Positioner
Volume 36 : Number 6 : Page 320 : Jun 2002
Although recent developments in bracket systems and more flexible wires have eliminated many of the problems associated with the early stages of lingual orthodontics,1-6 it is still difficult to achie...

Multidisciplinary Management of Double-Tooth Anomalies
Volume 43 : Number 7 : Page 0 : Jul 2009
A double tooth is a congenital anomaly in which two adjacent teeth are joined at the crown level (enamel and dentin), forming a single tooth with an enlarged crown.1 Although the cause is unknown, gen...

Dual Action Vertical Intra-Arch Technique
Volume 56 : Number 11 : Page 666 : Nov 2022
The DAVIT device, introduced here by Dr. Barros and colleagues, simultaneously intrudes the posterior teeth and extrudes the anterior teeth for open-bite correction, using bracket-head mini-implants as anchorage. Advantages over other nonsurgical techniques are illustrated with a case report.

A Digitally Planned Tandem Skeletal Expander and Hybrid Aligner Approach
Volume 57 : Number 1 : Page 32 : Jan 2023
This article describes a two-phase approach for treatment of transverse maxillary deficiency in adult patients, involving an initial stage of maxillary expansion with the Tandem Skeletal Expander followed by an orthodontic stage using clear aligner therapy. A typical case is presented.

Volume 57 : Number 9 : Page 522 : Sep 2023
Retromolar miniscrews are used to anchor en masse mandibular distalization in hyperdivergent Class III treatment. The lower third molars are extracted to provide space for the miniscrews and the distal movement, while various measures are taken to prevent anterior torque loss.

Rigid Implant Anchorage to Close a Mandibular First Molar Extraction Site
Volume 12 : Number 12 : Page 0 : Dec 1994
The mandibular first, maxillary first, mandibular second, and maxillary second molars were the four most commonly missing teeth in an adult sample.1 Assuming a distal abutment is available, a fixed pa...

Time: A New Orthodontic Philosophy
Volume 32 : Number 1 : Page 44 : Jan 1998
Although the SPEED* bracket was introduced by Hanson in 1980,1,2 interest in "self-ligating" bracket systems has only recently reached a peak.3-12 Another early bracket, the Mobil-lock**, works effect...

Step-By-Step Traction of a Palatally Impacted Canine
Volume 51 : Number 6 : Page 335 : Jun 2017
Two-phase treatment of a mixed-dentition patient with a palatally impacted canine is described and illustrated. After surgical exposure of the canine, the authors perform distal traction with miniscrew anchorage to relieve the obstruction caused by the adjacent lateral incisor. Under the guidance of cone-beam computed tomography, the canine is then moved into appropriate position for forced eruption into the arch.

Treatment of Labially Impacted Upper Central Incisors
Volume 49 : Number 11 : Page 701 : Nov 2015
When the parents or the general dentist notices erupted upper lateral incisors and only one erupted central incisor in an 8-to-10-year-old child, it raises the possibility of an impacted upper central incisor - a significant esthetic concern. Treatment of such a patient in the mixed dentition requires an understanding of the eruption pattern of the permanent teeth. If the single central incisor had erupted six months previously, for example, or the lateral incisors had erupted before the central incisor, it would indicate a developmental problem requiring further investigation.

The Biocreative Strategy Part 4: Molar Distalization in Nonextraction Treatment
Volume 52 : Number 9 : Page 462 : Sep 2018
In Biocreative mechanics, the force application from C-implants and elastics for full-arch distalization begins as soon as brackets are bonded. Two direct-pushing methods, using either the head or neck of the miniscrew, are presented by Drs. Chung, Kim, Choo, Kim, and Nelson.

Clinical Overview of InBrace Generation 2.0
Volume 57 : Number 7 : Page 376 : Jul 2023
Dr. Weissheimer and colleagues describe recent modifications and improvements to the original lingual InBrace system, including a redesigned bracket and a new Smartwire with lockets for nonsliding mechanics. The digital workflow is summarized, and a typical case is presented.

Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea with a Tongue Rehabilitation Device
Volume 54 : Number 7 : Page 400 : Jul 2020
Orthodontists are increasingly involved in identifying obstructive sleep apnea and treating it with intraoral devices. Unlike mandibular advancers, this Tongue Rehabilitator works by raising the tongue and directing it to a more physiological position, thus opening the posterior airway.
