Diagnosis of Anomalous Teeth with Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Volume 46 : Number 3 : Page 156 : Mar 2012

Tooth anomalies in the permanent dentition are rare and often incidental findings in routine orthodontic care. Occasionally, however, an anomaly may have a considerable impact on orthodontic treatment...

Generalized Idiopathic External Root Resorption

Volume 27 : Number 9 : Page 0 : Sep 1993

Root resorption is not in itself an unusual finding; a slight amount of root resorption may be present in all secondary teeth.1 Although a patient may complain that a tooth has suddenly loosened, it c...

A Space Maintainer for Growing Patients with Avulsed Central Incisors

Volume 46 : Number 1 : Page 27 : Jan 2012

Avulsion of the central incisors is not uncommon in children and adolescents who have experienced dental trauma. Although reimplantation is the ideal treatment, the longer the tooth is out of the alve...

Gradual Grinding of a Talon Cusp During Orthodontic Treatment

Volume 46 : Number 2 : Page 111 : Feb 2012

Dens evaginatus is a developmental aberration of a tooth resulting in formation of an accessory cusp that has been described as an abnormal tubercle, elevation, protuberance, excrescence, extrusion, o...

THE EDITOR'S CORNER

Pushing the Extraction Envelope

Volume 49 : Number 5 : Page 297 : May 2015

It seems that the great extraction debate is an inherent artifact of the specialty of orthodontics. I took up the subject in JCO as recently as December 2014, when Drs. Daniel J. Rinchuse, Lauren Sigl...

The Shoulder Spring for Eruption of Impacted Canines

Volume 51 : Number 10 : Page 657 : Oct 2017

The authors present a simple device for forced eruption of impacted canines without special patient compliance. Unlike previous techniques, it avoids using the lateral incisors for anchorage, reducing the possibility of root resorption and the need for additional palatal root torque.

Correction of Severe Crowding in Teenage Patients Using the Invisalign System

Volume 54 : Number 7 : Page 383 : Jul 2020

A young patient with upper and lower anterior crowding can now be treated without extractions using only clear aligners. Drs. Ojima, Dan, Kumagai, Watanabe, and Nanda demonstrate an approach involving upper arch expansion and molar distalization in a 12-year-old female.

Mini-Implant for Orthodontic Anchorage

Volume 11 : Number 11 : Page 763 : Nov 1997

Osseointegrated titanium implants have been used successfully to replace missing teeth, but their use for orthodontic anchorage has been limited by space.1-7 Conventional dental implants can only be p...

The Miniplate with Tube for Skeletal Anchorage

Volume 7 : Number 7 : Page 407 : Jul 2002

Anchorage control has always been a difficult and unpredictable challenge for orthodontists.1 Unlike headgear, which relies on patient compliance to achieve tooth movement,2 implants provide true stat...

A New Fixed Interarch Device for Class II Correction

Volume 37 : Number 1 : Page 36 : Jan 2003

Fixed devices are increasingly being used for molar distalization in Class II treatment because they eliminate the need for special patient compliance. These appliances fall into two main categories: ...

Use of Bonded Power Arms in Cases with Missing Upper Lateral Incisors

Volume 38 : Number 10 : Page 539 : Oct 2004

There are two basic options for treating patients with missing maxillary lateral incisors. The first is to close the spaces and substitute the canines for the lateral incisors; the second is to redist...

A Removable Class II Appliance for Simultaneous Distalization and Expansion

Volume 39 : Number 10 : Page 613 : Oct 2005

Treatment of a case of Class II malocclusion with maxillary arch constriction and anterior crowding generally involves expanding the arch, distalizing the molars, and aligning the anterior teeth.1-4 T...

Anatomical Limits for Distalization of Lower Posterior Molars with Micro-Implant Anchorage

Volume 53 : Number 5 : Page 305 : May 2019

Based on conventional lateral cephalograms, the anterior border of the ascending ramus has been considered the limit for lower molar distalization. Drs. Kim, Jang, and Park use computed tomography to provide visual evidence of a more realistic anatomical limit.

A Fixed Labial/Lingual Technique for Rapid Bite Opening

Volume 25 : Number 10 : Page 0 : Oct 1991

Lower incisor brackets are frequently sheared off by biting forces in deep-bite cases with minimal overjet. Previous methods of preventing this bracket loss have involved considerable time and expense...

Effects of First Bicuspid Extractions on Facial Height in High-Angle Cases

Volume 27 : Number 11 : Page 0 : Nov 1993

Some disagreement exists concerning the effect of bicuspid extractions on the vertical dimension. It has been suggested that orthodontic forward movement of the posterior teeth after bicuspid extracti...

Twist Ligation: A Technique to Reduce Archwire Binding

Volume 30 : Number 3 : Page 0 : Mar 1996

Differential anchorage is necessary when sliding mechanics must be applied asymmetrically. There is probably a linear relationship between stress (force per unit area) and tooth movement.1 However, be...

Modified Hyrax Expander for Correction of Upper Midline Deviation

Volume 43 : Number 3 : Page 158 : Mar 2009

In a mixed-dentition patient with maxillary transverse deficiency, when a deciduous canine is lost prematurely, the permanent incisors may migrate toward the affected side, reducing or closing the spa...

A New Palatal Implant with Interchangeable Upper Units

Volume 43 : Number 5 : Page 318 : May 2009

Although self-drilling miniscrews can be inserted without making an incision, resulting in a relatively low risk of infection, they have a high rate of failure. Miniplates can be used for molar distal...

Eruption and Alignment of Impacted Teeth with Multi-Purpose Attachments

Volume 46 : Number 8 : Page 486 : Aug 2012

A surgically exposed impacted tooth is usually brought into the arch using a bonded attachment such as a Begg bracket, a cleat or button, or a Monkey Hook.1 We have found our Multi-Purpose Attachment*...

Rapid Prototyping as an Adjunct for Autotransplantation of Impacted Teeth in the Esthetic Zone

Volume 49 : Number 11 : Page 711 : Nov 2015

Autotransplantation of teeth, introduced by Slagsvold and Bjercke more than 40 years ago, is a proven option either for substitution of missing teeth or for replacement of avulsed and traumatized teeth when the original donor teeth are available. In cases of severely impacted teeth, it can avoid the need for complex traction mechanics and the risks of side effects on adjacent teeth while reducing overall treatment time. The procedure requires viable periodontal ligament cells around the tooth to be transplanted. It is also technique-sensitive, necessitating proper preparation of the recipient site, in the exact size and shape of the donor tooth and root, to minimize the time the donor tooth remains outside the oral cavity during surgery.
