Controlling Sandblasting Debris

One of the most useful devices to be introduced in recent years is the Microetcher^*. Unfortunately, the flying debris produced by this machine can create quite a mess in the laboratory. The problem can be solved by using the sandblasting chamber supplied by the same manufacturer, but the chamber costs more than the Microetcher itself.

I have developed an inexpensive alternative method to control microetching debris. First, put on a rubber glove. Grasp the object to be sandblasted in the gloved hand with a bracket holder. With the other hand, slip a plastic sandwich bag over the gloved hand and bracket holder. Roll back the cuff of the glove over the open end of the plastic bag to seal the "chamber". Poke a hole in the plastic bag with the tip of the Microetcher, and sandblast the object as necessary.

The residue will be trapped inside the bag and can even be reclaimed if desired. When finished, discard the used glove and bag.
