I recently ran into one of my orthodontic graduate students at the University of Southern California after we had completed our morning workouts in the gym. I have known this promising young man since his days as a dental student, but before this encounter, he had always been rather shy, never daring to strike up a conversation with me. There was obviously something different in his demeanor this time, since he actively sought me out and began an enthusiastic dialogue. It seems he had recently signed a contract for an associateship following his graduation, and it was located in my old hometown: Albuquerque, New Mexico. At first, his line of conversation focused on the city itself. What did I think of it as a place to raise a family? What were my impressions of the local economic prospects? How is the cultural scene? What is there to do outside of work? I answered him as best I could. Albuquerque is a wonderful place both to live and practice. I indicated to the student that if there had been a dental school where I could teach, I would have been proud to stay and raise my family there. But when I asked him who the senior partner would be in his associateship, since I know many of the orthodontists in New Mexico, he suddenly returned to his customary reticence. He averted his eyes and sort of mumbled under his breath a name I had never heard. On further questioning, it turned out the reason for his reluctance was that the senior partner was not an orthodontist at all but, rather, a pediatric dentist with multiple offices who wanted to offer “in-house ortho”.

On a recent shopping trip to a large department store, my wife and I noticed a Wi-Fi-enabled Crock-Pot. Given that my wife was a busy teacher and elementary-school administrator and I was a busy orthodontist while we raised a large family, Crock-Pot cookery has been a mainstay of our household, allowing us to have hot, nutritious meals ready when we got home from work. But we were both a little puzzled as to why any Crock-Pot would need Wi-Fi capability. On closer investigation, we found that the Wi-Fi allows the user to monitor and control the cooking vessel from miles away, using a smartphone. It made me realize just how far into the digital age we are.

In this issue of JCO, we present the third and final installment of our series on the 2015 JCO Orthodontic Practice Study. It seems fitting, as I write this during the holiday season, to proclaim some glad tidings. The good news is a marked rise in the percentages of practices reporting increases in both case starts and gross income compared to the previous year - even higher than respondents to the 2013 Study had predicted, reaching a level of growth we have not seen since the 2001 Study.

Diagnostic Tools for the Modern Clinician

New computer applications for the practice of clinical orthodontics - long a recurring theme in the pages of this journal - continue to amaze me. Although I jumped on the practice-management bandwagon early on, giving up my beloved pegboard accounting systems shortly after the first orthodontic computer software became available in the late 1980s and '90s, it took many more years before I finally gave in and adopted the programs designed to assist in performing cephalometric analysis, diagnosis, and treatment planning. I still have my tracing box, mechanical pencils, and cephalometric protractor, along with about a quarter-ton of tracing acetate, but these wonderful old tools have been relegated to the curiosity box. I confess to occasionally taking them out of the closet and doing a case workup the old-fashioned way, if for no other reason than mere nostalgia - much like the enjoyment I derive from driving a horse-drawn carriage now and then. In the modern age, though, computerized tracing and analysis have long since replaced the old manual diagnostic workhorses. In fact, given the development of intraoral scanners and virtual models, we don't even need our dental stone casts any longer. They still make excellent paperweights and conversation pieces, but there is no need to use them for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.
