This textbook is now in its third edition, for good reason: it's a concise and highly organized approach to the treatment of dental trauma. By introducing each segment with a new page and boldface heading, rather than dividing the text into chapters, the authors invite readers to treat the book as a single entity. The main categories of dental trauma--including crown and root fracture, tooth luxation or avulsion, and soft-tissue injuries--are covered in detail, as are splinting and endodontic considerations. Sections on predictive factors for healing complications and tooth survival in the permanent dentition combine as an enlightening guide to long-term prognosis. Excellent information on dental trauma for patients and the public is further enhanced with a final four pages on prevention. A total of 284 well-referenced citations appear throughout the text.

Dr. Jens Andreasen and colleagues have created a textbook that is exceptionally well designed, highly informative, and a pleasure to read. Each topic is accompanied by high-quality color photographs, excellent radiographs, and graphic illustrations with easy-to-follow captions. Links to the interactive, Internet-based Dental Trauma Guide augment an excellent DVD displaying animations of 15 different trauma scenarios in a split-screen presentation: the clinical situation is illustrated on the left, with a superimposed graphic animation of the treatment, and the corresponding text is presented on the right.

This textbook should be essential reading for all dental residents and practitioners. One could even make a case for including it in the curriculum as part of dental first aid, or as an exceptional educational tool for preventing and limiting damage to the deciduous and permanent dentition.
