THE EDITOR'S CORNER

Who's Who on the Editorial Board

During its 40 years of publication, JCO has been blessed by having a great many renowned and influential orthodontists agree to serve on its editorial board. Reading over the list of names, I find myself feeling rather humble and unworthy to be counted among such a Who's Who of contemporary orthodontics. This month, I have the honor and pleasure to announce four new additions to our roster of Contributing Editors. Two of these orthodontists are already well known around the world, while the other two are among the rising stars of the specialty.

Dr. Jay Bowman is especially noted for his interest in mechanisms that can improve treatment efficiency without relying heavily on patient compliance. To that end, he has developed Class II Combination Therapy, which combines a molar distalizer with a fixed functional appliance. He has also been instrumental in the evolution and design of the Distal Jet, the Jasper Jumper, and a number of other ingenious devices for American Orthodontics. Dr. Bowman maintains a successful orthodontic practice in Kalamazoo and Portage, Michigan. He developed and teaches the straightwire course at the University of Michigan and is an Adjunct Associate Professor at St. Louis University. The author of more than 50 orthodontic articles, including many for JCO, he has lectured in more than a dozen countries.

Considering the significant increase in the number of JCO readers and authors from Asia over the past decade or so, we felt it appropriate to add a Contributing Editor from that part of the world. Although we could have chosen any of a number of highly qualified Asian orthodontists, we selected my esteemed colleague and long-time friend, Dr. Masatada Koga, of Tokyo. Masa, as he is known, is an Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at Tokyo Dental College. Since 1976, he has been known for his research into the mechanics and effects of preadjusted appliances; since 1992, he has been associated in that work with Dr. Richard McLaughlin, another of our Contributing Editors. Dr. Koga has published extensively in the Japanese literature. He also has a special interest in indirect bonding, having developed the Quick IDBS along with Dr. Kazuya Watanabe.

One of our rising stars, Dr. Vittorio Cacciafesta, received an international education in dentistry and orthodontics, studying at the University of Naples "Federico II" in Italy, Humboldt University in Berlin, and Aarhus University in Denmark. He is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthodontics, University of Pavia, Italy, as well as a Visiting Professor of Orthodontics at Aarhus University and at Temple University in Philadelphia. Credited with more than 100 articles, many of which have appeared in JCO, he is a Co-Editor of Ortodonzia Clinica and Associate Editor of Progress in Orthodontics. His major clinical interests are biomechanics, adult treatment, and lingual orthodontics.

Dr. John Graham began his dental career in oral and maxillofacial surgery, earning his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He switched to orthodontics, however, with only a year remaining in his six-year surgical residency, and received his certificate from my alma mater, the Eastman Dental Center at the University of Rochester, New York. Now he enjoys private practice in Litchfield Park, Arizona, where he can spend more time with his wife, a pediatric dentist, and their three young children. Dr. Graham has already provided our readers with considerable insight into medical-related topics such as the effects of bisphosphonates. Skeletal anchorage, the subject of his contribution to this month's issue, is another of his areas of expertise.

I want to extend my personal welcome and gratitude to these outstanding clinicians. I'm sure our readers can expect great things from them, both in these pages and in the specialty at large.
