Removing Bonded Retainers

Here is an easy technique for removing a bonded maxillary 3-3 retainer with multiple pads. Instead of grinding with a diamond bur or struggling with debonding instruments, use a Jarabak or similar long, pointed-nose plier. Place the tips between the cuspid and lateral incisor pads, and roll the plier mesially while pressing toward the lingual surfaces of the teeth (Fig. A).

As simple as opening a can of sardines, this method removes the entire retainer in seconds.
