THE EDITOR'S CORNER

JPO is honored this month with the beginning of what will come to be known as The Tweed Interview.

One cannot overestimate what Dr. Tweed means to orthodontics. With a liberal helping of the pioneering spirit of his parents, a remarkable gift of manual dexterity, an organized mind, an ability to "show and tell", a monumental integrity and, above it all, an obsession--a magnificent obsession--to excel in everything that he does, Dr. Tweed has undoubtedly had more influence in moulding orthodontics today than any individual since Edward Angle.

It may be in the nature of orthodontic treatment that a great deal of our progress derives from research in practice. No one has been able to make greater contributions in this area than Dr. Tweed. He has had the interest to investigate what his treatment procedures were accomplishing, the insight to establish orthodontic goals for himself, the integrity to re-treat hundreds of cases gratis in an attempt to improve on his results, and the willingness to share his knowledge, skill and experience with others.

With it all, Dr. Tweed has an orthodontic intuition. He is attracted to thoughts and techniques that seem to stand the test of time. Currently he is concerned with growth categories and the study of growth trends in individual patients through serial cephalometry. This is an approach to learning that should concern us all and a study of our individual patients in which we all should participate.

He is also concerned lest his beloved specialty of orthodontics become a triumph of American materialism or the victim of misguided mass treatment programs. There is none among us who should not share his concern.
