This second edition of a popular oral pathology atlas represents a remarkable improvement in a text that was outstanding to begin with. The number of authors has been increased "to geographically broaden the expertise" of the first edition.

The first chapter, aptly titled "The healthy mouth and normal variants", establishes a baseline of normality in its many diverse manifestations, allowing comparisons with the abnormal conditions that are presented in the remaining chapters. Chapters 2 and 3, "Congenital and heritable disorders with sole or prominent orofacial involvement" and "Congenital and heritable disorders with lesser or ofacial involvement", present a wide variety of congenital disorders, many of which, such as labial frena and clefting disorders, hold distinct interest to orthodontists. The remaining seven chapters clearly illustrate acquired periodontal, mucosal, salivary, and musculoskeletal disorders, along with pain and neurological disorders and or ofacial lesions in major medical conditions.

The book's strongest attribute may be the extraordinary quality of its extensive radiographs and color photographs, which make clear to the reader what the well-written text is trying to convey. Overall, this is an excellent color atlas of oral pathology that would benefit any dental or medical practitioner not only to own, but to use.
