With the patient base of the modern orthodontic practice currently representing every age group from infancy to senescence, the orthodontist is more likely than ever to see various manifestations of oral pathology. Therefore, it is essential for all practicing orthodontists to continually educate and re-educate themselves on that subject. This revised handbook by Crispian Scully should prove to be a valuable aid.

The text is arranged into sections on symptoms and signs, orofacial pain with a neurological or vascular background, orofacial complaints with a significant psychogenic background, mucosal disorders, salivary disorders, complaints affecting the gingiva, lip complaints, palate complaints, tongue complaints, and diagnosis and treatment. Within each section, the various maladies are arranged alphabetically.

The range of topics is quite extensive. According to the author, the book "covers the more common and important soft-tissue orofacial disorders and gives clinically relevant aspects of the aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and, where possible, the prevention. Several rare and exotic diseases are also mentioned."

Each disease entity is well illustrated with high-quality color photographs and radiographs when indicated. The text is clear and well written. In fact, this book is concise enough to serve as a standard chairside manual and is strongly recommended as such.
