Hi everyone! How does an ICAT scan compare to our standard radiographs (cephalograms/orthopantomograms) for ALL patients? Is it justified only in patients with impacted teeth? Would an ICAT scan for ALL orthodontic patients be overkill in terms of radiation exposure vs. information obtained through it? I understand from the ICAT company that over a third of their machines are purchased by orthodontists. What is your protocol with regards to an ICAT scan in the orthodontic office? Thank you! A 3D novice

You can read about the radiation dosage of CBCT scans in the articles at this link: http://dmfr.birjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/35/4/219
A discussion of the question whether CBCT scans should become the standard of care for orthodontic diagnosis is at the Worldwide Orthodontics Forum under the topic "3-D Imaging".
