Editor's Note: Each month, the JCO Online Study Club will cover a different topic of interest to orthodontists, with links provided to appropriate articles within the Online Archive. Future discussions may include some restricted articles. Your suggestions for further topics are welcome.)

Are we standing on the threshold of a "New Golden Age of Orthodontics"? Will a shortage of new orthodontists and the information age combine to create super-practices?
In a recent JCO Editor's Corner [May 2002], Dr. Robert Keim noted the sweeping embrace of the digital process by the orthodontic community and its profound effect on our ability to recall and share information. Dr. Keim also discussed a potential shortage of orthodontic graduates, the increased public awareness of the benefits of orthodontic treatment, and the resultant impact on the future of the specialty. Describing his own son's interest in orthodontics, Dr. Keim concluded: "How could I not encourage my son's desires to enter our profession? We are clearly at the dawn of a new Golden Age. The future is his."
In previous JCO Editor's Corners, Dr. Larry White [August 2001 and December 1999] and Dr. Eugene Gottlieb [April 1996 and April 1993] gave their own perspectives on the Golden Age of Orthodontics. All in all, these editorials provide plenty of food for thought about the future of our dynamic profession.
As JCO debuts its Online Archive, I invite you to participate in a discussion about the New Golden Age of Orthodontics. Follow the above links to the Archive to review the referenced editorials, then reply to this posting with your own opinions.
