Complete removal of any remaining adhesive from the enamel surface is critical after debonding, since residual composite can lead to unesthetic staining, caries, or periodontal problems. Once the larger remnants are removed with a hand scaler, a high-speed tungsten carbide finishing bur is generally used under dry conditions for better contrast between the resin and enamel. Success depends on the clinician's tactile ability to differentiate the composite from the enamel surface.
