About 10% of orthodontic patients present with maxillary midline diastemas wider than .5mm after eruption of the permanent canines, and roughly half of these patients experience relapse following orthodontic space closure. Although it is difficult to pinpoint the etiology of a midline diastema or to predict relapse, contributing factors may include the initial width of the diastema, a family history of diastemas, and additional maxillary anterior spacing.[...
