As Dr. David MacDonald states in his preface, "The purpose of this textbook is to guide diagnosticians of all skill levels in generating a diagnosis of lesions affecting the face and jaws." This goal is thoroughly accomplished in 18 chapters divided across four major subject areas.

Part 1 concisely introduces the basic concepts and myriad factors involved in radiographic interpretation and diagnosis, with comparisons of the advantages and disadvantages of various imaging modalities. Part 2 is devoted to the principles of five advanced imaging modalities: helical computed tomography, cone-beam computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and ultrasound. Part 3 describes the radiological pathology of the jaws, Part 4 the extragnathic head and neck regions. All chapters include high-quality illustrations with concise, readable legends, along with excellent decision-making flow charts to help guide the reader through the interpretive process. Each topic is well referenced with current evidence-based studies and epidemiological data that can be useful in identifying radiographic lesions and developing differential diagnoses.

Although the material is well presented, most of the diagnostic illustrations are from helical computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, perhaps because of availability issues. Clinicians who prefer conebeam computed tomography have only a few examples to use in the interpretation of head and neck lesions and the correlation of cone-beam images with similar anatomical areas as seen in helical computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Therefore, this textbook would seem best utilized as a reference by those who routinely practice interpretive and diagnostic oral maxillofacial radiology, or by clinicians who practice in medical environments where advanced imaging is employed.
