The family of appliances, including the Mini-Distalizing Appliance (MDA) and the Pendex, have proven effective in broadening the upper arch, distalizing upper molars (especially when the second and third molars are not fully erupted), and creating arch length. Depending on the facial muscular pattern and the appliance used, a clinician can reliably predict two-thirds distal molar movement vs. one-third anchorage loss in the rest of the arch.
